Recent win by Conservative government in UK election means Prime Minister David Cameron needs to keep his promise of referendum UK's position in European Union. Communications suggest that haggling, bargaining and negotiations have begun already and it won't be an easy task to convince European partners even with referendum threat.
Latest update -
- David Cameron has appointed former Exchequer George Osborne as UK's lead negotiator in the matter and planning to bring forward the referendum from 2017 to 2016, probably to avoid French and German election.
- German finance minister Wolfgag Schäuble said that European partners will not rush into changing the bloc's treaty in order to accommodate UK's proposals. Mr. Schäuble has also disregarded some of Mr. Osborne's plan as silly and unnecessary. However Germany is in favor of keeping Britain inside European Union.
Negotiating Britain's position remains a key challenge for UK's newly elected government as they risk an exit which might see another referendum in Scotland for Freedom. Many of UK's partner including the US think an exit from European Union would make UK politically weak, and economic impact would be adverse.
