Launching November 1, this limited-time offering brings together American fast-food style with authentic Kyoto flavors.

A 237-year-old Kyoto rice merchant is collaborating with Burger King Japan to introduce a culturally significant new rice burger. Burger King, renowned for its American-style hamburgers, is venturing into uncharted territory with the Kyoto Whopper, a harmonious blend of American and Japanese culinary elements. The cultural influence of Kyoto, a city steeped in tradition, is beautifully reflected in this unique addition to Burger King’s menu.

This unique collaboration between a 237-year-old Kyoto rice merchant and Burger King Japan is about creating a new product and celebrating both countries' rich culinary heritage. Unlike traditional “rice burgers” that replace the bun with rice patties, the Kyoto Whopper uses Japanese-grown rice as an added patty inside a standard sliced bread bun. The rice patty combines white rice from the 2024 autumn harvest and genmai (unpolished brown rice), selected in collaboration with Hachidaime Gihey. This Kyoto-based rice merchant has been in operation since 1787. The partnership highlights both companies’ connection to heritage, with Hachidaime Gihey’s expertise in rice matching Burger King’s roots in American fast food.

Kyoto Whopper Debuts with Authentic Japanese Flavors and Spices in a Limited-Time Offering

The Kyoto Whopper’s flavor profile is enriched with Japanese seasonings. A soy glaze is created by four kinds of dashi—bonito, shiitake mushroom, mackerel, and kombu (kelp). Traditional Japanese spices—benison togarashi chili pepper, ginger, sansho (a peppery herb with bitter notes), and chimps (dried mandarin orange peel)—complement this.

Priced at 990 yen (approximately US$6.60), the Kyoto Whopper makes its grand debut on November 1 and will be available nationwide for a limited time. This exclusive offering is a must-try for all food enthusiasts and Burger King customers. For those intrigued by Hachidaime Gihey’s rice selections, the rice merchant also contributes to the nighttime art exhibit at Kyoto’s Nijo Castle, offering another way to experience this Kyoto icon’s culinary craftsmanship.
