After a few leaks and a cryptic teaser, Activision finally confirmed that the next pop culture icons coming to “Call of Duty: Warzone” are two of the most popular monsters, Godzilla and King Kong. The Titans will be featured in a limited-time event aptly named Operation Monarch.
To recap, Activision released a trailer for the next season of “Call of Duty: Warzone” and “Vanguard” titled “Classified Arms” that included a mysterious roaring sound in the end. The publisher later released a separate teaser that only contained garbled sound that translated to the tagline “Monsters are real” through spectrographic analysis.
Activision officially confirmed on Thursday that all these teasers are pointing at the arrival of King Kong and Godzilla in the game, specifically in Caldera. A brief trailer for Operation Monarch shows King Kong smashing a military plane like a fly onto a mountain before charging towards the equally fearsome Godzilla emerging from the ocean.
While the developer has released an official blog post detailing the content of the upcoming season, not much was said about Operation Monarch. But it is confirmed that the limited-time event will go live on Wednesday, May 11, at 9 a.m. PT. The blog post also says Operation Monarch will introduce a new game mode in “Call of Duty” for Quads. But Activision did not provide details on its game mechanics, only noting that it is “based on several classic experiences with a titan-sized twist.”
“Call of Duty: Warzone” players should also expect to see more items around Caldera that are related to King Kong and Godzilla’s appearances. “Be on the lookout for the presence of ancient artifacts, Monarch Research equipment and tents, as well as…well, it won’t take much investigating to see the massive glowing axe jutting out of the ground right near the Resort,” Activision wrote.
Several map updates will be implemented in “Call of Duty: Warzone” as part of the upcoming season. For one, Runway will be rebuilt to include a new barracks and hangars, among other changes. Players will also find decommissioned planes in the area that they can use for cover.
