Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello started dating last year. Many saw their excellent chemistry in the former’s “Señorita” music video, so many fans were thrilled when they confirmed their relationship. However, there are others who suspect that the two are only “acting,” which means that their dating status has been planned to boost their careers - a PR stunt.
Why people doubt their dating status
Gossip Cop reported that Cabello and Mendes already knew each other for years. Their first project together was “I Know What You Did Last Summer” that was recorded not long after the former withdrew from her band, Fifth Harmony. Thus, the worldwide hit “Señorita” is actually their second team-up, and not long after this, they announced that they are dating.
Now, the rumors that their relationship is just for publicity started due to the timing of their announcement. It seems that they are saying that it was an effective strategy since the song became a hit after their “admission to dating.” Plus, their less passionate performance at last year’s American Music Awards further fueled the rumors that they are not dating for real but for business purposes only.
Shawn denies the allegations
Glamour reported that some reporters and paparazzi got the chance to interview Shawn Mendes when he was at the Los Angeles Airport’s terminal. It was said that as the singer walked through the terminal, they asked him if his and Camila Cabello’s relationship is fake, and he gave a short but concise answer of "No, definitely not a publicity stunt."
Moreover, in another interview, Mendes even shared that his girlfriend’s parents know him. "Camila's parents? I've known them for a long time," he said. With these shared details, it seems that he is trying to explain that the relationship is real, and as proof, their parents are aware of their romance.
Finally, Gossip Cop also pointed out that if indeed Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello are “acting,” they will not go as far as spending a lot of time together. Also, if all they want is a PR, they would have attended every big event for musicians and make sure that the photographers will take their photos while doing a PDA. The couple rarely even post pictures of them together, and if they are after attention, they would have uploaded lots of those “fake” dating snaps.
