Tesla's Cybertruck is set to debut in Canada this year after securing a vital exemption from Transport Canada.
Steer-by-Wire System Approved
Teslarati reports that after securing a significant exemption in Canada's market this week, electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer Tesla has stated that it intends to debut the Cybertruck there this year.
The Tesla Cybertruck was granted an exemption from the minimum steering angle standards by Transport Canada on Thursday. This means that the electric vehicle can now use its steer-by-wire system instead of a traditional steering column.
Cybertruck's Canadian Debut
In response to the information, on Saturday, the Tesla Cybertruck account announced on X that the business is still planning to debut the electric vehicle in Canada this year. This comes after an official had previously stated his expectation of a launch happening soon.
There is an exemption that allows Tesla to use and sell the Cybertruck until 2029. Normally, for testing, a minimum steering angle of plus or minus 270 degrees is required.
One of the requirements for the exemption is that, starting in 2025, Tesla must submit system-related incident reports every six months. If there are any changes to the electronic stability control system (ESC) or the system's steering angle, Tesla is also required to notify Transport Canada.
Technical Standards Document No. 126, Electronic Stability Control Systems for Light Vehicles, contains the requirement as laid out by Transport Canada in section 7.9.4, whereas the exemption is detailed here.
Ex-Tesla executive Rohan Patel expressed optimism in February that the Cybertruck's Canadian paperwork may be finalized soon, implying that the electric vehicle could be launched in its first non-U.S. market shortly, according to the report.
Despite widespread skepticism regarding the Cybertruck's suitability for regulation in some Asian, European, and other markets, Tesla has been taking the electric vehicle on a global tour. After a successful launch in China, Tesla expanded its Cybertruck tour to Japan, Thailand, and several European and Middle Eastern countries.
Global Expansion and Certification
Last month during Tesla's 2024 Annual Shareholder Meeting, Elon Musk said that next year the company would get certification for the Cybertruck in markets outside of North America. He went on to say, "for sure this year, it's just North America," implying that Canada could be among the countries to receive the electric vehicle this year.
