Canada's Canopy Growth Corp. will begin selling its cannabis beverage, Quatreau sparkling water, which contains 20 mg of US grown, hemp-based cannabidiol (CBD), in the US.
It is sold in the US only on Canopy Growth's e-commerce website.
The beverage contains 25 calories but without sugar and available in flavors of Cucumber and Mint, Passionfruit and Guava, Ginger and Lime, and Blueberry and Acai.
The suggested retail price is $3.99 per 12-oz. can.
Quatreau sparkling water is the Canadian market share leader in CBD-infused ready-to-drink beverages. It is available in Canada in both CBD and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) versions.
Canopy Growth President and Chief Product Officer Rade Kovacevic believe the product will popular among US consumers searching for a naturally flavored, zero-sugar option. He added that beverages are fueling growth in the CBD category.
However, the FDA has yet to clarify CBD's use as a food additive. It is being used in foods and beverages where state food safety authorities have allowed it, but it cannot cross state lines.
