Facing financial strain, OpenAI is evaluating an ad model for ChatGPT. Sam Altman, however, has voiced concerns, cautioning that such a move could damage user trust and conflict with the company's ethical goals.
OpenAI's Shift Towards Profit-Driven Strategies
While many are attempting to stop OpenAI from becoming a profit-driven firm, the company is actively working towards a structural shift. It appears the firm is not afraid to explore new things, which might lead to even greater success.
The Financial Times reports that in light of increasing operational expenses, it is contemplating a business model based on advertising.
Sarah Friar, the chief financial officer of the company, recently said that advertisements are being examined for inclusion in ChatGPT. She stressed that careful consideration will be given to the location and appearance of the ads. Friar then revealed in a subsequent statement that there are currently no plans to move this notion forward.
ChatGPT Ads and the Shivakumar Venkataraman Connection
The news broke after well-known ad domain expert and former Google executive Shivakumar Venkataraman joined OpenAI. His recommendations may have put this idea on the table, or it may be an attempt to make money off of its AI capabilities, WCCFTECH shares.
The majority of OpenAI's funding for its AI projects has come from subscriptions and business collaborations. The ever-increasing expense of developing these models, however, makes their perpetual maintenance problematic.
Microsoft and other major investors have put money into the company so it can diversify its revenue streams, but it makes reasonable that it would look into other possibilities as well.
Sam Altman’s Ethical Concerns Over OpenAI’s Ad Plans
With the business side of things in mind, OpenAI is thinking about using an advertising monetization model. However, Sam Altman is skeptical of it and even voiced his concerns at Harvard Business School.
The combination of advertising with AI-generated content, in his opinion, is problematic and should be avoided. Due to the potential erosion of user trust, Altman thinks the move should be reserved for last resorts.
The choice is now between giving in to financial demands and compromising on OpenAI's ethical goals.
