“With the increase in social media and access over the internet, there is a threat to our children that can go unnoticed,” said Ms. Sanna Heden, Deputy Executive Director for United for Human Rights Florida. “What is your child doing on the internet? Unfortunately, it has become easier for young men and women to get into human trafficking situations.”
Per the International Labour Organization, there is an estimated 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally and hundreds of thousands in the United States, per polarisproject.org. It is estimated that forced labor and human trafficking is a $150 billion industry.
United for Human Rights has hosted 3 such events, educating parents of the dangers of online trafficking. Deputy Jessica Hughey has delivered the seminars providing facts and stories and offering solutions to this growing problem.
“Everyone is invited to learn what they can do to protect their rights,” continued Ms. Heden. “Everyone has the Right to Privacy.”
