Luxury yachts can either be powered by the wind blowing on the sails or through gas via engines. Now, a ship-building company in Turkey called Ned Ship made a partnership with the renewable energy firm Solarwave in order to create a new generation of luxury yachts that completely rely on solar power.
Called the Solarwave 64, it’s an upgraded version from the one that the partners came out with back in 2015, Futurism reports. The previous one was called Solarwave 62 and it was the first ever fully functional luxury yacht that only relied on solar power to work.
The upgraded version is just as much of an emission-free water rider, but it comes with a huge addition of having unlimited range. Ned Ship’s Marketing Director, Egon Faiss confirmed as much on a New Atlas article.
"We can confirm that we do have an unlimited range only powered by the solar roof, during a normal sunny day and a cruising speed between 6-7 knots," Faiss had told the publication.
Basically, with the exception of resupplying for food, water, and daily necessities, the Solwarwave 64 could theoretically keep moving along for as long as the sun exists. As for what allows the yacht to actually do this, there is an array of 15kW photovoltaic panels on the roof that are connected to 100 kWh batteries that power the vessel.
With that amount of power, the boat and any appliance on board can function effectively regardless of whether it’s day or night. As a result, the things that would have required fossil fuel before in order to work no longer do.
On that note, since it is a luxury yacht, the overgrown boat will cost enthusiasts €2.5 million. There are also three classes to choose from, designated as “Cruiser,” “Sailor,” and “Power.” Each class comes with several different features, but all of them rely on solar power to work.
