It seems wireless charging is starting to take over the tech world, with companies jumping on the bandwagon starting with smartphones. However, Dell now has the enviable honor of being the first to introduce the world to a wirelessly charging 2-in-1 laptop. The caveat, however, is that the feature is basically an add-on.
Called the Latitude 7285, it is the first laptop device to make use of magnetic resonance technology in order to achieve charging capabilities, ZDNet reports. Based on WiTricity technology, it is vastly different from other forms of charging as it is able to penetrate through distance and materials in order to achieve energy transfer.
Heck, the technology doesn’t even require alignment as so many other wireless charging offers do, which significantly increases the appeal of the innovation. When paired with something like the WiGig dock offered by Lenovo, the Latitude becomes the ultimate example of wireless charging.
According to Dell’s senior VP of commercial client solutions, Kirk Schell, this new offer is in line with the company’s main mission.
"It's our mission to drive workforce transformation by providing user experiences that increase productivity as the world becomes more dependent on mobile devices. Our vision of a no wires workspace is foundational to that mission because it enables the freedom and flexibility today's employees demand," Schell said. "WiTricity's magnetic resonance technology was seamlessly integrated to enable the Latitude 7000 Series Detachable to be charged wirelessly over distance and with positional flexibility while keeping the 2-in-1 notebook's sleek design."
The 2-in-1 costs $1,199, The Verge reports, and actually functions as something of a hack. As for the features themselves, the laptop comes with an i5-7Y54 Intel processor, 128GB of SDD space, and 8GB of RAM. Those are moderately decent offerings, especially for a laptop that sports relatively unproven technology within the tech industry.
