Getting picked up by Netflix offers a long list of advantages for “Designated Survivor” season 3 viewers. For one, writers and producers no longer have to worry much about the censorship on swear words.
It is a common change appreciated by the cast and crew of shows that transferred its production from conventional TV networks to streaming platforms like Netflix. But it is not just about aimlessly including profanities in “Designated Survivor” season 3.
People neck-deep into the messy world of politics are most likely letting out some curse words from time to time. This means that in finding a new home in Netflix, “Designated Survivor” season 3 writers and producers could now bring the dialogues closer to reality.
Kiefer Sutherland, who plays commander-in-chief Tom Kirkman, explained how this new approach is also vital in the storytelling in “Designated Survivor” season 3. "This is how people talk," Sutherland said about finally having the characters lash out with expletives.
However, Kirkman has been portrayed as a good man amid so many chances to compromise for more political gains. So while people around him are starting to curse at one another, Kirkman deliberately has much less profanity in his “Designated Survivor” season 3 script.
"You'll notice that I'm the only character who doesn't swear now, and that's intentional. There will be two points when Kirkman does swear, and then it becomes really important because you realize he's losing control,” Sutherland further explained about “Designated Survivor” season 3.
The actor’s teasers almost seemingly hint at Kirkman changing into a tad worse version of himself. The central plot of “Designated Survivor” season 3 is Kirkman’s presidential campaign as an independent candidate. As Kirkman is being surrounded by opponents who do not care much about integrity, Sutherland said, “He's not going to pass every test."
The first and second season of the show had 21 and 22 episodes, respectively. However, “Designated Survivor” season 3 is only having 10 installments — another common change seen on shows bought by Netflix. New episodes will start streaming on Friday, June 7.
