The video game industry never wants for a juicy controversy, and in the case of EA’s upcoming World War II epic, "Battlefield V," the most recent issue has to do with the presence of female characters in the game. Many gamers have been complaining that this shouldn’t be the case since there were no women who fought during that time. However, aside from the fact that this is completely wrong, the developers refuse to budge on the issue.
In response to the recent controversy surrounding the upcoming shooter, Oskar Gabrielson, head of the development studio, DICE, tweeted that the option to play as a female character in "Battlefield V" will remain. There is apparently nothing that those who are complaining about the feature can do to change this fact.
“First, let me be clear about one thing. Player choice and female playable characters are here to stay,” the tweet reads. "We want 'Battlefield V' to represent all those who were a part of the greatest drama in human history, and give players choice to choose and customize the characters they play with."
"Our commitment as a studio is to do everything we can to create games that are inclusive and diverse. We always set out to push boundaries and deliver unexpected experiences. But above all, our games must be fun!"
As Gamespot also notes, the complaints that women didn’t fight during World War II are demonstrably false. Not only were there female snipers who joined the war, there was even an all-female battalion.
While it’s true that the bulk of the fighting force during the war was made up of men, the contributions of women cannot be understated either. It also wouldn’t be true to say that women didn’t play any role during the battles since they clearly did. With this, having the option to play as a female in "Battlefield V" only makes sense.
