“Doctor Who” Season 11 is a long-awaited version of the new doctor for several reasons, one of which is because it will be the first time that The Doctor is reborn as a female on screen. This adds a whole new dimension to the legendary character, which ended up dividing the fandom. On that note, Jodie Whittaker doesn’t appreciate being used as a political tool and would rather be an icon for everyone.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter recently, the actress shared her thoughts on the controversy surrounding her casting. Fans will remember the uproar that occurred when it was announced that “Doctor Who” Season 11 will feature a female Doctor. However, Jodie Whittaker does not believe that any one political movement should use this chance to push their own schemes forward, feminists included.
“It's about being an icon for everyone, which is what the Doctor has always been. Doctor Who has always had a fanbase that is very diverse, with male and female fans of all ages. For me it's about saying, 'Listen, there are 12-year-old boys watching this show, who have women in their life that they probably look up to; it isn't weird to look up to women,'” the actress said.
Another change that fans can expect from this version of The Doctor is that the people helping her out will be called “Friends” instead of “Companions,” Express reports. The change denotes a much closer bond between The Doctor and those with her, thus changing the dynamic in “Doctor Who” Season 11.
With regards to what fans can expect from “Doctor Who” Season 11, the BBC has some predictions on the matter. Just to sum up the feeling that this new Doctor exudes, though, it would seem that she is one of the most fearless incarnations of the character ever. “Doctor Who” Season 11 premieres on Oct. 7.
