Dom Dom Reintroduces Whole Soft-Shelled Crab Burger with a New Curry Flavor Twist
Japan’s boldest burger chain, Dom Dom Hamburger, is reintroducing its signature burgers stuffed with an entire soft-shelled crab, with a new twist—a curry flavor.
While burgers are known for their versatility, they typically rely on fillings that hold their shape, like ground beef patties or consist of a solid protein, such as fried chicken. Crab burgers are rare due to the flakiness of crab meat, which doesn’t lend itself to forming a patty or cutlet. Though crab cakes are an option, they often include breadcrumbs, which can disrupt the delicate balance between protein and bread in a burger.
However, Dom Dom Hamburger has a unique solution to this challenge. The chain is bringing back its Marugoto Kani Burger, with “kani” meaning crab and “marugoto” meaning “the whole thing” in Japanese. True to its name, this burger features a soft-shelled crab, deep-fried and placed between two buns. Visually, the burger looks almost comical, as though a confused hermit crab has taken up residence between slices of bread.
Dom Dom Introduces Mild Curry Sauce Marugoto Kani Burger: A Limited-Time Soft-Shelled Crab Delight
In addition to the original Sweet Chili Sauce Marugoto Kani Burger, Dom Dom is introducing a new variant for 2024—the Mild Curry Sauce Marugoto Kani Burger. Both versions are priced at 1,290 yen (approximately US$9.20), or 1,720 yen for a set including fries and a drink. While this is on the higher end for fast food, the price seems reasonable for a burger that consists of an entire soft-shelled crab, a rarity in fast food.
The Marugoto Kani Burgers will be available for a limited time starting September 28. Each has a special flag featuring Dom Dom’s elephant mascot, Domzo-kun. While a toothpick flag pulled from a fried crab may be an unusual keepsake, it fits with the uniqueness of this one-of-a-kind burger.
