Donald Trump’s involvement in the January 6 Capitol riots has led many organizations, including SAG-AFTRA, to take action against the now-former president. Following Trump’s resignation from the organization, the guild has now permanently barred the former president from ever rejoining.
Over the weekend, the members of the SAG-AFTRA board have reached the decision to ultimately deny any potential re-admissions Trump may make in the future. The board members made the decision via a Zoom conference, citing the same reasons as their initial disciplinary charges against Trump. They cited Trump’s constant antagonizing of journalists as well as having little regard for the values and integrity represented by the union. The statement also noted Trump’s refusal to adhere to a peaceful transition of power. Five members abstained from taking the vote on the resolution.
“Preventing Donald Trump from ever rejoining SAG-AFTRA is more than a symbolic step. It is a resounding statement that threatening or inciting harm against fellow members will not be tolerated. An attack against one is an attack against all,” said SAG-AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris.
With Trump no longer allowed re-admission to the organization, he may also no longer receive any intelligence briefings. Former presidents are usually allowed access to classified documents or intelligence briefings upon request, however, Trump may be an exception to this post-White House privilege. Joe Biden appeared on CBS News over the weekend where he was pressed by anchor Norah O’Donnell whether to still allow his predecessor access to classified information.
“I think not,” said Biden. “Because of his erratic behavior unrelated to the insurrection.”
When O’Donnell pressed further, Biden said he still stood by his belief that Trump was not fit to be president. O’Donnell noted Biden’s previous comments about Trump, calling the now-former president “dangerous” and “reckless.”
“I just think there is no need for him to have the intelligence briefings. What value is giving him an intelligence briefing? What impact does he have at all, other than the fact he might slip and say something?”
Biden did not comment on how he would vote on Trump’s upcoming impeachment trials. Instead, he said he is more focused on getting COVID-19 relief to Americans.
