Donald Trump has often joked about being president of the United States for a very long time. In his latest campaign rally, Trump suggested that he wants to be president for three terms, suggesting his desire to get a third term as commander-in-chief.
Trump made these comments during his campaign rally in Oshkosh, Wisconsin on Monday despite only currently being up for reelection for a second term as president. Trump reasoned that he is entitled to a third term as president because his campaign was “spied” on and thus deserved a do-over.
“We are going to win four more years, and then after that, we’ll go for another four years because they spied on my campaign. We should get a redo of four years,” said Trump.
The US Constitution prohibits Presidents from running more than two consecutive terms. Should Trump lose to former vice president Joe Biden in 2020, he could technically run again by 2024. It should also be noted that there is no provision for a do-over in the Constitution for the reason he is suggesting.
Furthermore, Trump’s accusation of his campaign being spied on was a counterintelligence investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding Russian interference in the 2016 elections, when Trump won over Hillary Clinton. This coincides with the release of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s final report in the possible foreign interference in the 2016 elections, which also reveals who may have colluded with Russian officials. The report has so far confirmed the interference to help Trump win and hurt Clinton’s presidential candidacy.
Nevertheless, Trump will be formally accepting the Republican party’s nomination and USA Today reports that Trump will be making his address to his party from the White House itself. Trump revealed this detail during his visit to Yuma, Arizona, noting that he would be delivering his Republican address from the White House South Lawn.
Trump also took a swipe at former first lady Michelle Obama, who was among the Democrats who made a speech on the opening day of the Democratic convention that began this week. Trump said that he will be making his speech live compared to the former first lady, whose address was pre-taped.
