The Nintendo Switch is not exactly the most powerful console on the market, which is why it was such a huge surprise to find out that Bethesda’s Doom reboot would be coming to the hybrid unit. The fast-paced, gore fest of a shooter is on both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, and they run incredibly well on those platforms. According to those who have tried the Switch version, performance is surprisingly great.
Select gaming publications were given the chance to take Doom out for a spin on the Switch during a recent conference. As Kotaku notes after trying it out, the game performs better than it had any business of doing, especially on a gaming platform that is widely considered as underpowered.
Of course, since it is a portable console, it’s only to be expected that there would be some concessions when porting the demon-slaying title on Nintendo’s popular gaming slab. For one thing, it runs at 30 fps, courtesy of Polygon. By comparison, the PS4 and Xbox One versions ran at 60 fps. Even so, that is more than anyone could have expected from the Switch given the demanding nature of the game.
What’s more, anyone who doesn’t really pay attention to such details likely won’t find the Switch version of Doom to be different compared to other platforms. The FPS is still the digit-fracturing, reaction-straining title, Engadget reports. Unless the player is obsessed with frame rates, the game apparently plays quite smoothly.
Of course, the testers were only able to play a small portion of Doom on the Switch and it’s difficult to say if the final product is actually going to deliver on the expectations it has just set. If the full version is anything like the early build, though, Nintendo is going to be bogged down with even more Switch orders.
