EA Play is no longer just a name for Electronic Arts’ exclusive event every June where new games and updates are announced. It is now the name for the game publisher’s more streamlined subscription service that replaces the EA Access and Origin Access, and it is launching on Steam later this month.
EA Play goes live on Steam this month
Valve’s digital distribution platform becomes the fourth place where the EA Play services will be sold. EA Play was previously made available on the Origin, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Its launch on Steam on Aug. 31 follows the release of some popular EA titles, like “The Sims 4” and its content packs, on Steam earlier this year.
There are two tiers of EA Play subscriptions. The basic version is available for only $4.99 a month or $29.99 for a one-time annual subscription that translates to a 50% discount. The EA Play Pro, which is only available through the Origin online store, costs $14.99 a month or $99.99 a year.
EA Play vs EA Play Pro: What’s the difference?
The differences in the prices of EA Play and EA Play Pro are explained by the differences in the games library and exclusive perks they offer. Naturally, the more expensive tier has more things to offer, but the basic EA Play still seems appealing for its price.
The entry-level EA Play subscription gives gamers access to some very popular EA titles including previous “FIFA” and “Madden” games, “Battlefield,” “Mass Effect Andromeda,” “Need for Speed,” “Titanfall 2,” “The Sims 4,” and more. Basic EA Play gives people a 10% discount on digital purchases that range from full games, DLC packs, and Season Passes.
There will be up to 10 hours of free trial on select new titles for EA Play subscribers. It also offers saved progress service so they will no have to start from scratch should they decide to purchase the game. Meanwhile, the EA Play Pro tier offers early access to some editions of upcoming EA games and the games included in The Pro Play List.
However, the company said in a press release that EA Play members are also getting early access to the “Madden NFL 21” starting on Friday, Aug. 21 before it launches on other platforms on Aug. 25. “FIFA 21” will also go live a few days early on EA Play on Oct. 1 while the rest of the gaming community will get the game on Oct. 9.
