Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi celebrated their 15th anniversary earlier this month and the “Ellen Show” host gifted her wife with a special event! However, the romantic gesture turned into something funny and confusing and here’s why.
On Dec. 2, Ellen DeGeneres uploaded a short video and it showed a small plane flying by the beach and passing by a house. Apparently, it was an event that the famous talk show host had prepared to mark the 15 years that she and her wife started dating.
A plane was supposed to pass by and a banner at its tail should convey a message. The event was definitely romantic and would make one’s heart flutter however there was a small problem. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia DeRossi could not see the sign as the plane zoomed by their beachfront home.
The banner was too small to see high up so the surprise gift turned into a hilarious episode. Ellen DeGeneres later lamented that she made a mistake. It was almost a perfect gift to Portia De Rossi but she forgot to give the right specifications.
On Instagram, the 60-year-old host wrote, “Portia and I started dating 15 years ago today. I hired a plane to fly by the house with a banner that said 15 with a heart. I should have specified the size.”
As can be heard in the clip, someone said, “I can’t see it!” then there was laughter. Portia De Rossi also took to social media to express how she felt about her wife’s surprise event and it was hilarious. The former model also uploaded a video of the flying plane and captioned it with, “My wife surprised me with this for our 15th anniversary. Sometimes bigger is better.”
Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi got married on Aug. 16, 2008, in their home in California. Their wedding was planned as soon as the same-sex marriage was approved in Los Angeles.
