Elon Musk announced that SpaceX would provide free Starlink terminals to wildfire-stricken areas in Los Angeles. The Tesla CEO shared on social media platform X that the terminals would be delivered by Thursday morning to support communities facing disruptions caused by the fires. Reports indicate that several news agencies are already relying on Starlink due to damaged cell networks.
Starlink, with over 4.6 million global users, employs a network of satellites to deliver reliable telecommunications coverage, even during ground-level disruptions. This technology has proven crucial in maintaining connectivity during emergencies like the ongoing wildfires.
Musk also criticized the California government, including Governor Gavin Newsom, for allegedly failing to prevent such crises. His posts highlighted concerns over the state's management and preparedness for natural disasters.
Los Angeles County has faced widespread devastation as wildfires fueled by low humidity, dry vegetation, and a lack of rainfall swept through the region. Firefighters are battling at least six blazes, with key areas like the Pacific Palisades and Pasadena severely affected. Over 100,000 residents have been ordered to evacuate as authorities struggle to contain the damage.
The provision of Starlink terminals underscores the importance of resilient communication systems during natural disasters. Musk’s comments, however, have sparked a broader conversation about the state’s crisis management and accountability.
