A while ago, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk gave the world a tiny glimpse as to what the private space company’s space suit is going to look like. The billionaire did this again, this time providing a clearer view of the outfit with the Dragon capsule as the background. This development is noteworthy because it shows how committed Musk and his team are at getting people to Mars.
Musk showed off the new spacesuit via Instagram post, the same as last time. In the caption, the tech figure simply wrote “Astronaut spacesuit next to Crew Dragon.”
It’s worth pointing out that this is not a concept suit, nor is it a prototype. The suit has already been tested and survived double vacuum pressure, which is required for surviving things like actual launches. Then again, without additional details, publications are left to infer details about the suit based on how it looks.
Because of the slim nature of the suit, or at least its appearance of slimness in the picture, it can be deduced that the suit is not intended to withstand the demands of something like a spacewalk. As New Atlas notes, it’s similar to what high altitude pilots wear in order to keep themselves from passing out.
A space suit that can survive an exit from the spaceship for things like walking on the moon or eventually, to walk on Mars can essentially be considered a miniature habitat. It’s intended to have its own life support systems, temperature control, and of course, oxygen. What the SpaceX space suit that Musk is revealing will not be able to do any of those things.
While the SpaceX space suit can do things like keeping the astronauts from dying in case of a hull breach, it won’t provide protection for very long. Then again, the precious seconds of life is often the measurement that astronauts contend with anyway.
