Facebook was used by Russia to compromise US democracy. This is an established fact that no amount of wishful thinking and denial on Mark Zuckerberg’s part can change. In an effort to shine a more positive light on its impact on the world, Facebook Vice President David Marcus recently argued that the social network does good things too and that “sometimes bad things happen.”
Marcus made the statement during the D.Live conference by The Wall Street Journal, Fortune reports. After months of unflattering headlines that basically lambasted the social network for its role in helping Donald Trump get elected, the Facebook VP wants people to start focusing on all the good that the company has done.
“Let’s not just forget all the good that the Facebook platform and its various products bring to the world,” Marcus said.
The executive argued that the social network helps bridge people of various ethnicities, religions, status in life, and nationalities in positive ways. Those who want to connect with others who suffer from the same or similar health conditions, for example, can do so on Facebook.
Marcus also recognized how the social media giant has grown to a point where it has become a major force in the world. No matter how much it tries to stay out of politics and inflict only positive change, it can no longer do so without a considerable amount of effort and sacrifice.
“When you design a platform that reaches 2 billion people every month, sometimes bad things happen,” Marcus said.
With regards to the actual case of Russian meddling, the Facebook VP also noted that Messenger was used by some of these agents to sow chaos, Engadget reports. Marcus did not share how many they have discovered, so far, but he assures that they were small in number.
