Creating video games from scratch can be a mind-numbingly tedious affair with plenty of coding and design work to get through before actually getting to the fun part. In the future, however, video game developers might start relying on artificial intelligence to do some of the grunt work for them such as designing a title’s levels. One particular AI is already making some headway towards this by using Doom as a template.
To be clear, the AI us using the original Doom from the 90s and not the rebooted doom released for the current generation of consoles. As a famously ubiquitous title that can run on practically anything with an operating system, it was an obvious choice to allow the project called Generative Adversarial Network to create video game level designs. It seems the results were impressive, to say the least.
Relying on two AIs to basically work off of each other, one creates the level designs while the other basically critiques it. The goal is to create a design that is indistinguishable from what a human would make and this is done by feeding the AIs with data from the designs that were made by actual humans.
The AI that judges the work of the AI that builds will take into account several factors to conclude if the level was made by a machine or a person. These include the height of the walls, how many rooms were built, and just how big the level is.
Barring a few exceptions that involve some confusion on the part of the AI with regards to the appearance of walls, it seems the project passed with flying colors. This has led the researchers to conclude that the project could soon move on to other, more complicated titles, Futurism reports. Perhaps someday, it can start working with the current rebooted Doom.
