‘Gambit’ producer Simon Kinberg explained the cause of the film’s delay in development saying that finding the right tone and voice was the challenging part of the project. He hoped that the film won’t take ten years to make while comparing it to another Marvel film ‘Deadpool’.
According to Vulture, Kinberg addressed concerns regarding the planned X-Men standalone film’s development delay. He said, “The truth is when you have these movies that need a very special and unique tone, it takes a little while to find that tone. ... Deadpool feels like it exploded out of nowhere but it was a ten-year development process on that movie. I think it was honed over those ten years.”
He added, “I hope that Gambit doesn’t take ten years but it takes a little honing to get that tone and that voice exactly right. The character has such a specific voice in the comic in the same way thatDeadpool has a specific voice in the comic, that we want to make sure that we capture that voice on the page. Really it’s just about getting a screenplay that is worthy of that character and I think we’re really close right now.”
The British-born American screenwriter and film producer is best known for his work on the ‘X-Men’ cinematic franchise. He co-wrote 2006’s ‘X-Men: The Last Stand’ alongside Zak Penn and worked as producer on 2011’s ‘X-Men: First Class’. He returned as writer and producer on 2014’s ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ as well as 2016’s ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ and also produced 2016’s ‘Deadpool’.
During an interview with /Film, Kinberg confirmed his involvement with the planned ‘Deadpool’ sequel. He said, “I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today especially in superhero movies… The sort of glut or saturation of these movies and the proliferation of sequels is definitely something we’ll play around with.” The first film directed by Tim Miller became a critical and commercial success, grossing $783.77 million worldwide on a production budget of $58 million.
Kinberg also revealed that he was actively thinking about a follow-up for the recently released ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’. He said, “I’m a lifer for the X-Men movies… I’m just working now, without giving anything away, I’m figuring out what the next of the mainline X-Men movies is going to be.”
‘Gambit’ is a planned action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to premiere some time in 2018. Rupert Wyatt was originally attached to direct the film but dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Doug Liman of ‘The Bourne Identity’ and ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ fame has stepped in to serve as the film’s director.
Channing Tatum is set to play the titular superhero Remy LeBeau a.ka. Gambit.
