‘Girlboss’ is set to debut on Netflix this month. It was created by Kay Cannon, with Charlize Theron serving as one of the series’ executive producers. It focuses on the life of ‘Nasty Gal’ founder Sophia Amoruso.
The upcoming original Netflix comedy is set to follow the life of ‘Nasty Gal’ founder Sophia Amoruso’s life before her rise to the top. The 32-year old American businesswoman started an eBay online store with the name ‘Nasty Gal Vintage’ at the age of 22 and her venture grew into one of the fastest-growing companies in the fashion retail industry. Amoruso was also named one of the richest self-made women by Forbes Magazine in 2016.
However, Amoruso announced that she was stepping down from her CEO position. ‘Nasty Gal’ eventually filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2016 and was recently purchased by the BooHoo group with Amoruso resigning as executive chairman.
According to Variety, the show is a stylized version of Amoruso’s life before forging her multi-million company in a rags-to-riches story. It is executive produced by Charlize Theron, Laverne McKinnon, Christian Ditter, Beth Kono, and Amoruso. It was based on Amoruso’s autobiography with the same name.
Creator Kay Cannon attended the premiere in Los Angeles on April 17 together with Theron, Amoruso, and star Britt Robertson. Cannon talked about Amoruso’s life inspired her to adapt the autobiography on the small screen.
Cannon said, “Society has this deeply rooted love of seeing women fail… I wanted to do this story because I wanted to show that you can fail and be OK, and to show women — especially young women — that it’s okay to suck as long as you pick yourself up and start again.” She added, “I love that she’s flawed and kind of an a—hole, because you know she is going to grow.”
According to The Verge, Theron also described the series as homage to Amoruso’s turbulent life saying, “I built a whole career on flawed and f*cked up characters… I have a love affair with that stuff.”
The South-African actress and producer also admitted that the process of making the show proved to be challenging. According to E! Online, Theron revealed, "One person said to us, 'There are too many girls in this… I was like, 'And your problem is?'”
‘Girlboss’ season 1 is scheduled to air on Netflix on April 21, 2017. It stars Britt Robertson as Sophia Amoruso.
