The family of Virginia Giuffre, a key accuser in the Jeffrey Epstein case who died by suicide in April at 41, is urging President Donald Trump not to grant clemency to Ghislaine Maxwell. Maxwell, a British socialite, is serving a 20-year sentence for aiding Epstein in the sexual abuse of underage girls.
The plea follows Trump’s recent remarks claiming Epstein recruited Giuffre from Trump’s Mar-a-Lago club in 2000, where she worked at the spa. The family called the comments “shocking” and questioned whether Trump knew about Epstein’s abuse at the time. Trump has not been accused of any wrongdoing.
Giuffre alleged she was trafficked by Epstein between 2000 and 2002, starting at age 16. Her death comes as pressure mounts for Trump to release federal documents tied to Epstein’s 2019 arrest and Maxwell’s 2021 conviction. Deputy U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche, formerly Trump’s lawyer, recently met with Maxwell to assess potential information she may hold about other offenders.
Maxwell’s attorney, David Markus, has requested relief for his client, but Trump stated he has not considered a pardon. A senior Trump administration official dismissed speculation about leniency as “false.”
Trump acknowledged socializing with Epstein in the 1990s and 2000s but claimed he later banned him from Mar-a-Lago for “poaching” employees, including Giuffre. The Giuffre family cited a 2002 interview where Trump praised Epstein, raising further questions about his awareness of Epstein’s conduct.
At Maxwell’s trial, former Epstein employee Juan Alessi testified that Maxwell recruited Giuffre from Mar-a-Lago and later brought her to Epstein’s Palm Beach residence.
The Giuffre family insists, “The government and the President should never consider giving Ghislaine Maxwell any leniency. Maxwell destroyed many young lives.”
