Global Geo-political Series: Normandy four talk wasn’t failure, it was disaster

Yesterday, we evaluated whether the Normandy four talks among Russia, France, Germany and Ukraine failed or succeeded; and we could see that despite high hopes the talks have failed. Expectations were high from the talk as it could have played an important role in diffusing tensions globally. Before coming to the Normandy four talks, Russian President Vladimir Putin canceled his trip to Paris as the French president Francois Hollande criticized Russia over its involvement in Syria.

After the meeting, the failure was evident as the powerful trio failed to hold a joint conference and as France accused Russia of war crimes. But after a while, it became even more evident that the talks were not only a failure but a disaster.

It became clear that just after the talks, in the European leaders’ summit both Germany and France were pushing for more sanctions on Russia supported by the United Kingdom. Only Italy was opposed to the idea so the sanctions didn’t come into effect.

Russia made it clear that there would be retaliations if more sanctions are imposed and it should have been somewhat clear by now that sanctions won’t work to make truce in Syria, it would worsen the situation.
