Global Geo-political Series: President Trump calls for unity but sides with Saudi Arabia in Middle East conflict

The US President Donald Trump has called for Unity in the Gulf, while siding with Saudi Arabia in the recent conflict that erupted this week as five countries, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, and the fragile government in Yemen have severed ties with the Gulf state of Qatar accusing the latter of supporting and financing extremist and terrorist organizations as well as meddling in other countries’ affairs.

President Donald Trump has made a call to the King of Saudi Arabia to urge unity among Gulf members. A White House official said that President Trump has urged for unity in order to fight extremism in the region. While Qatar hosts the biggest military base that the United States has in the region, President Trump’s tweets seem to suggest that he sided with Saudi Arabia in this latest dispute. Less than 24hrs ago, President Trump tweeted, “During my recent trip to the Middle East I stated that there can no longer be funding of Radical Ideology. Leaders pointed to Qatar - look!” He added further in another following tweet, “So good to see the Saudi Arabia visit with the King and 50 countries already paying off. They said they would take a hard line on funding......extremism, and all reference was pointing to Qatar. Perhaps this will be the beginning of the end to the horror of terrorism!”

With United States’ military base at Qatar, which played the role of moderator or intermediated in many conflicts in the region including the recent supply agreement within and outside OPEC, sharp deteriorations of relations to the point where military actions follow, will not be in the interest of the world as well as the United States.
