Global Geo-political Series: Trump defies promise and returns to nation building and regime change in Venezuela

United States President Donald Trump has backtracked on one of his popular campaign promise, which might have disturbed global partners and war hawks in Congress but delighted his supporters. During the campaign, he heavily criticized America’s war-mongering foreign policies and trillions of dollars spent in fighting those wars. He also stressed that America can’t be the policeman of the world and his administration will not be involved in nation building and will not try to impose the ways of America on other but will act as a shining light for others to follow.

However, he and his administration seem to have back tracked on those promises as America involves itself in the current political crisis in Venezuela. Previously, his administration imposed sanctions on top officials of Venezuela and its President Maduro himself but now in a statement White House announced on Friday that the President has signed an executive order that imposes stringent financial sanctions on the country. Venezuela has been suffering political crisis since Nicolas Maduro came to power in 2013 after the death of charismatic leader Hugo Chavez. In 2017, Maduro ordered a federal election by Presidential decree and won but it many countries and opposition parties have spoken against the election which saw very low turnout amid military presence. Some independent estimate suggests that turnout was as low as 25-30 percent.

Speaking during a press conference on North Korea, President Trump said that the United States have many options when it comes to Venezuela including a military option. According to a statement from the White House, “The President’s new action prohibits dealings in new debt and equity issued by the government of Venezuela and its state oil company. It also prohibits dealings in certain existing bonds owned by the Venezuelan public sector, as well as dividend payments to the government of Venezuela.” These latest sanctions will surely hurt Maduro government and Venezuela people as well as the country is going to suffer no access to the dollar, which is vital for oil trade, the country’s only major source of revenue.

United States’ unilateral action on Venezuela bypassing United Nation once again shows that policies pursued by the Trump administration are going to be a lot different than his promises.
