Global Geo-political Series: Trump escalates tensions with Germany via tweeter

After the G7 leaders failed to converge on the issue of Paris Climate Accord, and the German Chancellor announced attending a rally in Germany that Europe can no longer rely on the UK and the United States and must take its fate into its own hands, the US president escalated the tensions with Germany via tweeter. The relation between the German and the United States strained under President Trump who has been furious with the trade surplus that Germany runs with the United States and the country’s refusal to meet the NATO 2 percent of GDP spending on the military.

President Trump didn’t respond to a calling by Angela Merkel to shake hands during her visit to the White House, though White House later said that it was unintentional. Last week, he faced a similar snub when the newly elected French president Emmanuel Macron evaded President Trump at the last moment to shake hands with the German chancellor and other leaders before coming back to him. President Trump called on NATO members to contribute their fair share to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) during his visit at NATO headquarter.

President Trump tweeted just hours ago, “We have a MASSIVE trade deficit with Germany, plus they pay FAR LESS than they should on NATO & military. Very bad for U.S. This will change”

Speaking at a joint press conference during her visit to the White House, Chancellor Merkel said that Germany will increase military spending but NATO objective will not be met until 2022 and the German government in the past rejected paying past dues suggesting that NATO doesn’t have a debit account.
