Greek government over the negotiation of new bailout claimed money against Germany over Nazi occupation of Greece during WWII.
History -
- Nazi led Germany occupied Greece from 1941-1944 that resulted in a death of 250,000 people from hunger and massacre.
- Nazis looted 476 million Reich mark from Greece's central bank at that time.
- Greek government have raised three claims over Germany. Around € 11-50 billion for the money looted. General claim of € 100 billion and € 28 million for a particular massacre.
- German government has so far shrugged off the claims. Germany back in 1960 paid Greece 115 million Deutschmarks which was allegedly forced upon at that time on Greece.
- Greece in 1990 and 1995 claimed for reparations which was not granted.
- Government even threatened to property seizures.
Prospect of the claim -
- Prospect of negotiation has gone up recently after two leading social democrats coalition partner of Chancellor Merkel raised the issue and asked for negotiation or even debate legally rather than just shrug off.
Impact -
- Any reparations would be good news for Greek economy and banks. Greek people will cheer any move in that line and Syriza will gain immense popularity.
- May not be good for current government's rating among people.
However a lot remains to be negotiated over before any signs of light can be seen in this front.
