“Grey's Anatomy” season 16 was given a go signal by ABC and announced that there would be two more seasons before the series finally concludes. It was speculated before that the show was ending in the 15th installment, but this renewal should calm the fans down no for it would certainly be back.
The drama is hugely popular, and this was proven with its longevity alone. It has been on-air for 14 years this year and will be around for a year or two more.
Series renewal and Ellen Pompeo’s contract
“Grey’s Anatomy” season 16 was renewed in May, and Ellen Pompeo’s contract was also extended about the same time. Her contract extension is effective until 2021, so this means that her character in the medical drama, Dr. Meredith Grey, will also be part of season 17. This guaranteed that the series would take its final bow with the major original cast members intact.
Plot - What to expect?
Although details about “Grey’s Anatomy” season 16 is still scarce, one of the show’s writers, Elisabeth R. Finch, hinted that the plot for the next installment would highlight Dr. Jo Karev's (Camilla Luddington) storyline. She is also the co-executive producer and revealed that the viewers will see Jo still battling depression after finding out that her mother was raped and she was the result of that abuse.
In season 15’s finale, Dr. Jo got herself admitted in a psychiatric ward. In “Grey’s Anatomy” season 16, she will get over the mental torments and likely to recover as she leaves the facility. It was suggested that her friends would respond to her cry for help so she will get better.
"She has not had an easy life and having this experience really fundamentally changed her," Finch divulged. "So giving the space on our screen to actually show her desperate for help and then actually having her ask for and get the help that she needs is something we don't really get to talk a lot about on television."
Release Date
“Grey's Anatomy” season 16’s premiere was announced on July 2 by ABC. It will be returning on Sept. 26 at 9 p.m.
