Shortly after the release of “Avengers: Endgame,” rumors started to circulate online that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is possibly the last installment to feature the superhero team together. Meanwhile, it is also anticipated to highlight the development of Rocket’s (voiced by Bradley Cooper) character.
Earlier this month, a 4Chan thread made headlines as it purportedly contains a long list of plot details and updates on the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 4, to which “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is included. Given the source of information, fans must read through it with a pinch of salt. But it does share some very interesting details on the future of MCU.
“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” is rumored to be the final installment where fans will be seeing Rocket, Peter (Chris Pratt), Drax (Dave Bautista), Groot (Vin Diesel), Nebula (Karen Gillan), and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) together. If this turns out to be accurate, it is possible that these characters might appear separately in other upcoming MCU films. The same source claimed that Pratt is signed to do “several movies” for MCU after “Avengers: Endgame.”
In the second movie of the series, fans saw Rocket struggle in processing his emotions and adjusting to a life of being part of a team. Unexpectedly, he learned his much-needed lessons at the time from Yondu (Michael Rooker), who later died in the sequel. It now appears that the development of Rocket’s character will only be completed in “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.”
The same information leak indicated that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will have the team of superheroes fights the High Evolutionary. The next main villain is reportedly going to be introduced as Rocket’s maker that could mean the movie will dig deeper into his past, probably the same way as Peter’s identity was explored in the second film.
James Gunn, who directed the first two films, was fired by Marvel last year as several old, controversial tweets of his resurfaced. But he recently told Deadline that “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” will likely use the script he wrote before he lost his job.
“[Rocket] has an arc that started in the first movie, continued into the second and goes through ‘Infinity War’ and ‘Endgame,’ and then I was set to really finish that arc in [‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3,’”] Gunn said. “That was a big loss to me—not being able to finish that story — though I was comforted by the fact that they were still planning to use my script.”
