Honda Motor is recalling more than 2.5 million vehicle units in the United States. The Japanese automobile manufacturer's American division issued the recall due to a defect affecting the fuel pump. This flaw can lead to accidents because it can result in increased risks of engine failure, where the car can suddenly shut down while driving.
Cause of the Vehicle Glitch
According to Associated Press News, based on the documents that were published by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the cause of the issue was the fuel pump impeller that was not properly molded.
The traffic regulator said this flaw could lead to low-density impellers, which may end up being deformed and eventually meddling with the fuel pump body over time. Once this happens, the fuel pump could break and stop working altogether.
If the fuel pump module becomes inoperable, the vehicle's engine may not start and stall in the middle of driving. This increases the crash and injury risks for passengers. Then again, Honda Motor said it has not yet received a report of any incident related to the affected vehicles.
Recalled Models and Resolution
Reuters reported that to fix the issue, authorized dealers of Honda Motor will replace the fuel pump module. The NHTSA noted that this replacement is free of charge.
Honda Motor's latest recall affects the 2018-2020 Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, HR-V, Ridgeline, and Odyssey models. The company is also recalling some 2017-2020 Acura models.
The company will mail recall notification letters to owners on February 5, 2024. "Countermeasure replacement parts are not available in sufficient quantities for all recalled vehicles at the time of this announcement, and American Honda intends to notify vehicle owners in stages," Honda Motor said in a statement.
