Hyundai and Kia kick-start "Universal Mobility 2.0" in Singapore, a navigation initiative supporting vulnerable pedestrians, focusing on the visually impaired and wheelchair users, evolving from their successful EnableLA project.
Universal Mobility is a smart city project initiated by Hyundai and Kia, designed to create a futuristic urban environment and mobility solutions that enable unrestricted movement for all, especially vulnerable pedestrians. The new Universal Mobility 2.0 project follows the successful EnableLA demonstration, a car-hailing service conducted by Hyundai and Kia in Los Angeles from August 2021 to February 2022.
The primary objective of Universal Mobility 2.0 is to enhance convenience for vulnerable road users, focusing on individuals with visual impairments and wheelchair users. Previously, Hyundai and Kia introduced EnableLA, the first version of Universal Mobility, which offered a mobile app-based car-hailing service for wheelchair users. Specifically, trained chauffeurs provided safe transportation to the desired destinations using modified vehicles such as the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride.
With Universal Mobility 2.0, Hyundai and Kia aim to facilitate the movement of vulnerable pedestrians, ensuring they encounter no impediments before and after boarding the vehicles. The nine-week demonstration project will take place at the Enabling Village, a community and education campus for disabled individuals in Singapore.
The project includes the provision of a tailored route-based navigation solution, allowing individuals with disabilities, especially those visiting the campus for the first time, to move freely indoors and outdoors. Vulnerable pedestrians can access road guidance to destinations within the campus or location information for surrounding areas using a mobile application.
The "Universal Mobility 2.0" demonstration project demonstrates Hyundai and Kia's commitment to inclusive mobility solutions and their efforts to create a more accessible and inclusive urban environment. By leveraging cutting-edge technology and innovative solutions, the companies aim to make transportation easier and more convenient for vulnerable pedestrians, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.
This groundbreaking project marks a significant step forward in smart city development and showcases Hyundai and Kia's dedication to enhancing mobility for everyone.
