Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan returned to prison on Friday after spending several hours overnight at an Islamabad hospital for a medical examination ordered by the country’s Supreme Court.
Khan, 73, was transferred from Adiala prison to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad early Friday, according to his political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). Following the medical assessment, he was taken back to the prison in Rawalpindi, a PTI spokesperson confirmed.
The hospital visit followed a Supreme Court directive issued on Tuesday requiring authorities to move Khan to Shifa International Hospital within 48 hours. The court also ordered that he be examined by a medical panel that includes his personal physician, addressing concerns raised by his legal team about his condition while incarcerated.
Khan has remained in custody since August 2023 amid a series of legal cases. The former Pakistani prime minister maintains that the charges against him are politically motivated and intended to prevent his return to political power. Pakistan’s government has repeatedly rejected those allegations.
Concerns about Imran Khan’s health have intensified in recent months. His lawyers have claimed that his condition has deteriorated during his imprisonment and that he has suffered significant loss of vision in his right eye.
Government officials, however, have disputed suggestions that Khan requires urgent medical intervention. Authorities have said previously disclosed medical reports found no health condition requiring immediate treatment.
The Supreme Court’s intervention has renewed attention on Khan’s imprisonment and health as his supporters continue to demand greater access to independent medical care.
Khan, a former international cricket star who entered politics and later became prime minister, remains one of Pakistan’s most prominent political figures. His continued detention has fueled political tensions between PTI supporters and the government, while his legal battles and health remain closely watched across Pakistan.
