Since its founding, Instagram has basically allowed users’ feeds to get muddled up with posts from all followed accounts, which makes for a messy interface. Soon, this will change with the addition of a mute feature. It works by basically allowing Instagram users to pick which accounts they want to show up on their feeds and which to block.
The new mute feature works by removing the posts of those whose accounts the users don’t want to follow. As such, even if the users are still technically following those accounts, they simply won’t see the pictures and videos that they put up, Business Insider reports. This makes significantly less cluttered feeds and allows for a leaner social media experience.
What’s more, muting the accounts of those who users don’t want to see cluttering their feeds won’t even know that they have been muted. As such, the act won’t cause any friction just in case the account that was muted is someone that the user knows in real life.
There’s also the matter of the influencers on the platform, who might be having trouble keeping up with all of the followers that they have and the accounts that they themselves follow. If those numbers go up to the thousands or tens of thousands, it can end up making a mess of their feeds quite fast.
Due to the mute feature, however, it will make life more bearable for users such as those calling themselves Instagram models. As CNN notes, the ease of use of the feature is also perfect for those who might only need a temporary reprieve of all the noise that their feeds generate.
Accounts can be unmuted if the users want and they can still view their posts by simply going to the muted accounts directly. This is basically similar to what Facebook already has in place, which makes it a wonder why it took so long for it to be implemented on Instagram.
