On Tuesday, it was Intel’s turn to wow attendees of the 2018 Computex conference in Taipei with a demonstration, and boy did it ever. The company showed off impressive innovations one after another, including a 28-core chip and the Anniversary Edition 8086K processor. Intel was clearly trying to send a message on stage to its competitors that it intends to stay on top.
During the presentation, Gregory Bryant, Intel's senior vice president and general manager of the company's client computing group, showed off the power of the new chip and it was glorious. For a single-socket processor, it was a fairly straightforward offering. However, the performance results towered at 5GHz and apparently tore up the Cinebench benchmark test in a matter of seconds, PC World reports.
No chip comes anywhere near that kind of result, at least not one that has been revealed too or has been made available to the public. This particular chip is still a bit of a mystery as well, with the company refusing to release more details about it.
Then again, it apparently won’t be long before some more information is provided, with Bryant saying that the chip will ship by Q4. At that time, users themselves can conduct all the tests they want.
There’s also the matter of the Anniversary Edition of the 8086 processor, with the company apparently planning to give away 8,086 Core i7-8086K processors, according to Bryant. This particular processor has a base clock speed of 4GHz, but it can be overclocked to 5GHz without a problem.
As Market Watch notes, these announcements and more are basically Intel’s way of fighting back against the encroachment of its competitors on its territories. The company used to be the sole king of the industry, with rivals like AMD posing only minor threats in the past. By pushing new technological innovations to the limits, Intel is striving to protect its position.
