The internet has been the breeding ground of some of the strangest and most baffling trends that ever was, from the so-called dabbing to eating tide pods. Now, one of the current trends is going nuts over the fact that someone apparently bought a copy of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Game Gear. It would seem that this particular copy has been sitting on the shelf since 1992.
Normally, someone buying a copy of the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2 video game wouldn’t be worth mentioning, but publications chose to go nuts over this particular case because of just how odd it is. As Mashable notes, the game wasn’t bought online at an auction site where hardcore fans would bid to get their paws on the title. No, this was bought from an actual brick and mortar store.
This information was covered by an analyst from the video game industry analysis firm, The NDP Group, Mat Piscatella. He Tweeted about the purchase on Saturday that has since blown up the web. What caught everyone’s attention was the fact that a game was sitting on a shelf for 26 years and was only recently bought.
With regards to the actual store that sold the copy of the game or the person that bought it, someone reached out to Piscatella via Twitter and said that it was his brother-in-law who bought the game and that it was purchased at a store in Wisconsin. It would also seem that they tried to play the game, but it was no longer working properly, which was only to be expected.
Another interesting point to this story is that the copy was intended to be played via the Sega Game Gear. This particular hardware was discontinued in 1997, Tech Times notes, which means that the store held on to the game long before it became unplayable.
