Blizzard’s Overwatch is one of the most popular video games in the market right now, with millions of players logging in online and shooting each other for giggles every single day. With the Nintendo Switch coming out, some people were hoping that they might be able to play the game while on the move. According to Overwatch’s director, however, the chances of this happening are slim.
At this point, it’s no secret that the Switch is not the most muscle-heavy console on the market. It pales in comparison to both the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, which is why it can’t accommodate several demanding AAA games. While video game director Jeff Kaplan is not committing to an outright rejection of the idea of Overwatch on Switch, he is not offering much hope either, Game Zone reports.
Kaplan made the comment when he spoke with Express, noting how the spec performance of the console/portable hybrid could present serious challenges. On top of that, he also acknowledges that maintaining three systems was hard enough, with the PS4, the Xbox One, and the PC versions of the game.
"I think the problem is, we've really targeted our min spec in a way that we would have to revisit performance and how to get on that platform,” Kaplan said. “And also, it's already challenging right now maintaining three platforms and patching simultaneously, which is something that we've finally been able to achieve."
The performance problem that Kaplan is talking about might have less to do with graphics and more to do with frame rates. Gamers who play Overwatch at 30 frames per second might find the fast-paced, accuracy-demanding game even more challenging that it already is. Barring issues with their internet, Switch players might find shooting people on Overwatch unbearable, which would only hurt the game.
