Israel conducted airstrikes on Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen’s port city of Hodeidah on Sunday, following recent Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting Israel. The strikes are part of Israel’s response to potential threats from Iran-backed groups in the Middle East. The Houthi-run health ministry reported at least four deaths and 29 injuries from the airstrikes.
Escalation in Lebanon as Israel Intensifies Bombardment
Israel continued its military operations in Lebanon, targeting Hezbollah positions across the country. Lebanon’s health ministry reported that Israeli airstrikes on Sunday alone killed at least 105 people, including 32 in Ain Deleb and 33 in Baalbek-Hermel. The strikes over the past weeks have displaced thousands from their homes. Israeli drones hovered over Beirut, with explosions reverberating throughout the capital.
Heightened Tensions Between Hezbollah and Israel
The escalation comes amid ongoing hostilities between Hezbollah and Israel since the war in Gaza, triggered by the Oct. 7 Hamas attack. Hezbollah and Israel have been trading fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. Although reports suggested that Israel killed several senior Hezbollah leaders, including in these airstrikes, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Hezbollah’s secretary-general, has not been confirmed dead by any official source.
Widening Regional Conflict and U.S. Response
The conflict raises fears of a broader regional escalation involving Iran, an ally to both Hezbollah and the Houthis, and the United States, Israel’s main ally. U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of avoiding a full-scale war in the Middle East, stating, “It has to be.” The U.S. military presence in the region has been reinforced, and discussions between Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are ongoing.
Displacement and Humanitarian Impact in Lebanon
Lebanon’s health ministry has reported over 1,000 deaths and 6,000 injuries from the conflict in the past two weeks. The airstrikes have forced thousands of Lebanese from their homes, with the government estimating that a large portion of the population has been displaced.
Israel's Broader Military Campaign
Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant has confirmed the expansion of military operations, stating, “Our message is clear – for us, no place is too far.” The strikes have targeted various sites in Lebanon and Yemen, aiming to mitigate perceived threats from groups aligned with Iran, as the region faces rising violence and instability.
