Israel has confirmed the return of the body of Meny Godard, a 73-year-old Israeli hostage killed during the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023. According to a statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, the body was transferred from Gaza through the International Committee of the Red Cross on Thursday, marking a significant development in ongoing efforts to account for all hostages taken during the assault.
Godard, a resident of a kibbutz near the Gaza border, was killed when militants stormed his community. His death was officially declared on December 8, 2023, but his remains had been held in Gaza until the recent transfer. After arriving in Israel, forensic teams quickly identified the body as Godard’s within three hours. Israeli officials emphasized their continued commitment to securing the return of all remaining hostages—both the living and the deceased—still held in Gaza.
Prior to the transfer, the armed wings of Hamas and Islamic Jihad announced their intention to hand over a hostage’s body at 8 p.m. local time, though Israeli authorities noted they had received no formal notification. Islamic Jihad later stated that the body had been recovered in Khan Younis, a city in southern Gaza and a focal point of recent conflict.
Israel reports that the remains of three additional hostages are still being held by Palestinian militants. The government reiterated that ongoing diplomatic and military efforts aim to return all hostages for “proper burial in their country,” underscoring the emotional and national significance of these recoveries.
Under the temporary ceasefire agreement reached in October, Hamas released the last 20 surviving Israeli hostages in exchange for nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees. The deal also included a provision for the exchange of bodies, resulting in the return of 28 Israeli hostage remains in exchange for 360 militant bodies.
The recovery of Godard’s remains adds to a series of sensitive transfers that continue to shape the humanitarian and political landscape of the Gaza war, highlighting both the deep human toll and the complex negotiations surrounding hostage issues.
