Fans of “Jane The Virgin” are definitely as heartbroken as the many times the show's titular protagonist when The CW announced that season 5 will be its last.
Rumors of season 5 being the last season initially surfaced during a South by Southwest (SXSW) panel with Gina Rodriguez, who plays the protagonist Jane Villanueva, hinting at the possible ending of the series. The show's ending was confirmed by The CW president Mark Pedowitz on May 17.
In an interview with the New York Times, Jennie Snyder Urman confirmed that from the start, “Jane the Virgin” was originally meant to run only for four seasons. But the developments of the first two seasons allowed the show to extend for one more season due to the amount of material generated. Urman teased a potential Ricky Martin guest starring, considering it a dream casting for the show. Urman also confirmed that Gina Rodriguez will be directing two episodes of season 5, which will include the new season's premiere.
Still, Urman does not give a definite answer as to whom Jane will eventually end up with considering the massive reveal of season 4. News about the show's fifth season becoming the last may be as big a shock to those who have followed season 4 as closely as possible.
In a shocking twist for the “Jane the Virgin” season 4 finale, Jane's former flame, Michael Cordero, is revealed to be alive and well. The shocking twist came when fans least expected it, considering that Michael was last shown to have had a heart attack that supposedly led to his death in “Jane the Virgin” season 3.
“Jane the Virgin” season 5 has yet to have a concrete premiere date but considering that the previous seasons have usually aired in October, fans can potentially expect a later premiere for the much-beloved soap opera.
