Elon Musk Donates Substantial Sum to Trump-Supporting PAC Amid Rising Criticism of Biden
Bloomberg reported (via Reuters) on July 12 that billionaire Elon Musk, increasing his criticism of US President Joe Biden, has contributed to a political organization attempting to elect his opponent, Donald Trump.
The report did not specify the amount of money Musk donated; however, it did mention that it was "a substantial sum" donated to a group known as America PAC.
Bloomberg reported that the PAC permitted to accept unlimited contributions for political purposes, is obligated to disclose its donor list on July 15.
Trump, a former US President anticipated to be formally nominated as the Republican Party's candidate for the November 5 election next week, met with Musk and other affluent donors in March.
Born in South Africa, Musk responded to reports of the meeting by posting on X, "Just to be super clear, I am not donating money to either candidate for US President." In May, he also denied media allegations that there had been discussions regarding a potential advisory role for him in the event of a Trump presidency.
Tesla TSLA.O, SpaceX, X, and other companies are all owned by Musk, the world's wealthiest individual. Musk did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.
Joe Biden Campaign Criticizes Elon Musk for Supporting Trump, Citing Negative Impact on Tesla's Reputation
According to James Singer, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, Musk is aware that Trump is “a sucker who will sell America out, cutting his taxes while raising taxes on the middle class by $2,500.”
“Joe Biden has been standing up to people like Elon and fighting for the middle class his entire career – and it’s why he’ll win in November,” Singer said in a statement.
In recent years, Musk has more thoroughly embraced the Republican Party, negatively impacting Tesla's reputation and sales, the primary source of his wealth.
Last month, Trump reiterated his commitment to promptly rescind the Biden administration's "mandate" to support the electric vehicle industry. However, he also stated, “I’m a big fan of electric cars. I’m a fan of Elon.”
“He does an incredible job with Tesla.”
Musk stated that they had engaged in "a few conversations" and that Trump was a "fervent supporter of the cyber trucks," Tesla's electric pickup vehicles.
Although Musk has publicly criticized Biden's policies on immigration, electric vehicles, and his age, he has not made any formal endorsements in the November contest. Trump has stated that he is still determining whether Musk supports him.
Musk has denied that he is antisemitic, but he has also endorsed antisemitic comments on X.
According to a CivicScience survey exclusively disclosed to Reuters, Musk's opinions have undermined his credibility with specific consumers.
