Former vice president Joe Biden is currently facing sexual assault allegations made by a former Senate staff member Tara Reade. Biden recently reiterated that such assault never happened, and said that Americans who believe Reade probably should not cast their votes for him in November.
Biden recently had a virtual town hall and an interview on MSNBC. Host Lawrence O’Donnell asked the former vice president what he would say to the women who are set to cast their votes in November while believing the allegations made against him by Reade. Biden responded that if they believed Reade’s accusations made against him, then they probably should not vote for him. The ex-vice president also noted that even he would not vote for himself if he thought the claims made were true.
“I think they should vote their heart. And if they believe Tara Reade, they probably shouldn’t vote for me. I wouldn’t vote for me if I believed Tara Reade,” said Biden during the interview.
Pressing further into the issue of the allegations, Biden made it clear that women who decide to come forward with their allegations of sexual assault should be heard but noted how the details of Reade’s claims made against him have changed over time.
Republicans and avid supporters of President Donald Trump have since tried to use the allegations against Biden, branding him as a hypocrite, noting the scandal involving Justice Brett Kavanaugh. Trump has previously shown some sympathy for Biden, commenting that he hoped the allegations made against him were false and even going so far as to encourage the former vice president to fight against these claims.
The controversy has since resulted in a moral dilemma for many Democrats, while others have insisted that they will still vote for the former vice president despite the claims. On the other hand, many were and still are skeptical about Reade’s allegations, including people Reade has met in the past. Several people who knew Reade revealed to Politico that she had nothing but praise for Biden while she was working for him at the Senate at the time and that her interactions with them were less than positive.
Those who met Reade reportedly laid the same facts in that she was proud of her time at the Senate, and that she took advantage of people’s kindness to get money, skip paying rent or simply leaving without paying.
