KFC Singapore has replaced french fries with waffle hash as the disruptions to global supply resulted in a fries shortage. The fried chicken restaurant is quietly making its move to find a substitute for the missing favorite menu item and assured customers this would only be temporary.
A report from Singapore's Mothership stated that the waffle hash is already available at KFC stores in the country, and it is being served in the KFC Zinger Box and other meal items that originally have french fries. It was said that almost all the branches in SG are now serving four pieces of waffle hash to replace a packet of fried potato sticks.
Then again, it was clarified that there are still KFC stores in Singapore that are delivering fries, such as the branch in Jurong. However, the serving was noticeably very "little" compared to how it used to be.
The fast-food chain posted notes to inform customers that it has a limited stock of french fries, so it may not be available at times. KFC Singapore wrote in the notice: "Dear Guests, Due to the global supply disruption, we have limited French Fries available so all meal bundles with it will be replaced with Waffle Hash, temporarily. Trade-ups to French Fries and Cheese Fries will also not be available during this period."
In any case, the french fry shortage is not only affecting KFC SG as other regional units of the fried chicken brand are also experiencing the same issue. Other fast-food stores, including McDonald's and Popeyes, have the same problem as well.
Last month, McDonald's was forced to halt the sale of medium and large fries, and limited the orders to just the small size. Prior to this, it has completely pulled out the fries due to the delays in potato shipments. The burger joint said that the supply disruption was due to the effects of massive flooding near the Port of Vancouver in Canada.
In Australia, KFC also took out a few items from the menu as there is not enough supply of ingredients to fulfill the orders. The restaurant struggled for a while since it also has a hard time sourcing fresh chicken, which is the brand's major food item.
At that time, KFC Australia's spokesperson told CNN Business, "We are working with our multiple suppliers to mitigate the impact and provide them with support, but we expect some disruptions to continue in the coming weeks."
