Vice President Kamala Harris made history in her election success as the first Black, first Asian American, and the first woman overall to be elected to the position. With Harris breaking ground, she is also this year’s recipient of the Generation Change Award at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards.
Harris is the 2021 recipient of the Generation Change Award at the recent Kids’ Choice Awards. The accolade comes from the initiative of ViacomCBS, the parent company of Nickelodeon, which aims to bring together leaders and the youth in order to bring forth change for the better. Previous recipients of the award include LeBron James and Megan Rapinoe. In her acceptance speech, Harris thanked the youth that did their part to help others in the midst of the ongoing pandemic and recalled that her mother would tell her to “Do something about it” rather than sit and complain.
“Well you are doing something,” said Harris. “You are creating a better future and you inspire me and President Biden every day. We are so grateful for you and we want you to know that we’re doing everything we can to make sure all of our students and young leaders can get back to school and back with your friends, and be safe and thrive. Thank you for stepping up. You make us and your country so proud.”
A statement from ViacomCBS Global Head of Inclusion and Executive Vice President, Public Affairs, Kids & Family Entertainment’s Marva Smalls said, “Vice President Kamala Harris is a pioneer and role model for us all, but especially for today’s kids, who can find inspiration in the story of her path forward and the barriers she has broken from childhood to today.”
Meanwhile, Harris will be visiting Las Vegas Monday with her husband, second gentleman Doug Emhoff as part of their “Help is Here” tour to promote the American Rescue Plan that was signed into law last week. Harris is set to stop by a vaccine clinic at UNLV and then to the culinary academy of Las Vegas. Emhoff is set to visit a food relief organization and take part in a listening session with the organization’s partners. Harris and Emhoff will then be traveling to California afterward.
