Kawhi Leonard’s journey with the Toronto Raptors is well underway and the ex-Spurs superstar is ready to work with his new team. Obviously, the talented forward needs to shake off some rust as he didn’t play all that much in the previous season, The Star reported.
“(It’s) just positioning yourself on the floor, getting your rhythm down, remembering your steps to get to the basket, remembering your spots, your wind, just everything,” Kawhi Leonard said after the Raptors concluded their first full training camp practice at Fortius Sport and Health.
Apart from his personal focus, however, Kawhi Leonard also needs to develop chemistry with his new team. While the two-time Defensive Player of the Year offers a lot on both ends of the floor, working with the roster is integral to winning games. And the forward himself realizes this.
“We’re building a new team this year,” Kawhi Leonard said. “It always takes time to create that chemistry. Knowing where guys are going to be, me knowing where their spots are, them knowing where my spots are, that stuff takes time, it takes practice and game playing.”
Indeed, they’re going to need a lot of time in order to sync how they play on the court. This is doubly true this year as the Raptors have a new head coach. It can be recalled that Nick Nurse was promoted to the position after Dwane Casey lost it after suffering a devastating defeat from LeBron James's Cavs last playoffs. However, it seems that Nurse and Kawhi Leonard are off to a great start as the two are apparently in sync in what they’re planning to do moving forward.
But not everything is going swimmingly. Kyle Lowry is supposedly unsatisfied with how the current roster is shaping up, especially when his friend DeMar DeRozan was traded without prior notice. According to reports, the point guard is avoiding calls from Raptors president Masai Ujiri and hasn’t spoken to Nurse since his promotion. What’s more, Lowry apparently only exchanged brief words with Kawi Leonard after the surprise trade.
If these reports hold true, then the Raptors have a chemistry problem on their hands, and a big one at that. There’s also the fact that Kawhi Leonard might be thinking of transferring to another team once he becomes an unrestricted free agent this summer.
During his recent post-conference as a Raptor, Kawhi Leonard didn’t address this very question and only said he’s focused on the present. “I look at it as a day-to-day process,” the forward said. “My focus is on this year, this role that I have and us trying to get to a championship. If you look into the future, you’ll trip over the present.”
