The New York Knicks and Minnesota Timberwolves agreed to a blockbuster trade, sending Julius Randle to Minnesota in exchange for Karl-Anthony Towns. The trade also includes Donte DiVincenzo and a first-round pick, shaking up both teams ahead of the new NBA season.
On Friday, the Knicks and the Timberwolves struck a massive agreement that would see Karl-Anthony Towns play for the Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
Towns Set to Lead New Era in New York
New York is reportedly trading All-Star forward Julius Randle to Minnesota, as reported by SNY's Ian Begley. Donte DiVincenzo and a first-round draft choice from Detroit in the future are reportedly included in the trade as well, according to The Athletic.
Towns, a four-time All-Star and widely regarded as one of the NBA's top centers and forwards, is joining the Knicks. Over the course of last season's 62 games for the young Timberwolves, the 7-foot-1 Towns averaged 21.8 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.0 assists (on a 50% shooting clip).
Randle’s Departure Signals Major Change for Knicks
New York's trade of three-time All-Star Randle before training camp is a huge deal.
Reports from SNY indicate that the Knicks had discussions with other clubs about trading for Randle throughout the offseason. These teams included the Miami Heat, the Detroit Pistons, and the Atlanta Hawks.
Randle’s All-NBA Performance Made Him a Key Asset
In New York, the 6-9 forward has blossomed into an All-NBA player, as reported by Yahoo Finance. He has been named to the all-league thrice in the previous five seasons and won the NBA's Most Improved Player title in 2020-21.
After suffering a shoulder injury in January's game against the Heat, Randle was forced to undergo surgery and ultimately missed 46 games last season. However, when he was playing, he was the primary scorer for New York.
Randle’s Stats Proved Crucial for Knicks’ Offense
On a game-by-game basis, he averaged 24.0 points (47% shooting), 9.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists.
