‘Kong: Skull Island’ recently unveiled the first official photograph showing lead actors Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson in a gigantic bone yard. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts teased that the film will feature the “biggest Kong” in the popular franchise.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Universal released the first official photograph from the upcoming film ahead of the San Diego Comic-Con. The photograph showed Hiddleston and Larson’s characters surveying a foggy landscape littered with gigantic bones.
Hiddleston and Larson are set to play ex-British SAS tracker Captain James Conrad and war photographer Weaver, respectively. Hiddleston is seen brandishing a weapon while Larson is armed with a camera. The two looked to be on high alert in their surroundings.
Although plot details remain scarce as of the present, the new film will follow a group of explorers venturing to a mysterious island believed to be Kong’s home following its discovery by a NASA satellite. The island is also inhabited by other gigantic creatures.
According to Comic Book Resources, Legendary Pictures is bringing ‘Kong: Skull Island’ to the 2016 Comic-Con held in San Diego, California. The presentation will take place in Hall H on July 23 at the San Diego Convention Center.
Jordan Vogt-Roberts is set to helm the film written by John Gatins and Max Borenstein. According to Entertainment Weekly, the director teased that his version of the titular creature will be “bigger” than others portrayed in the franchise’s celebrated history in cinema as seen in the newly released photograph.
Vogt-Roberts said, “From the size of the skull, you can tell that things on this island are much bigger than audiences are used to with traditional Kong lore… Our Kong is by far the biggest Kong that you’ve seen on screen, and that translates to a lot of different things on the island.”
He explained, “In terms of actual size, our Kong is by far the biggest Kong… Peter Jackson’s Kong was around 25 feet. The ‘33 Kong ranged between 25 feet and 50 feet, I want to say he was 50-plus feet when he was on the Empire State Building. He varied in size dramatically! The ’70s Kong was somewhere between them.”
The director revealed that the film will be taking place in the 1970s and will explore Kong’s mythology further. He said, “We’re very explicitly not telling the beauty and the beast story… The original is a classic, the ’70s version is great for what it is, and Peter’s version is a great retelling of the 1933 film.”
‘Kong: Skull Island’ is an upcoming action-adventure and fantasy film scheduled to premiere on March 10, 2017. It is intended as a reboot of the ‘King Kong’ franchise and will serve as the second installment in Legendary’s Godzilla-Kong cinematic series.
